Join us!

Meet the Artist

Joelie Russell

The artist behind Expedition Letters is Joelie from Western Australia. She is a child educator & artist who currently lives in Cocos Keeling islands.HOW DID WE MEET?
Joelie came aboard Nesi as the expedition teacher for 4 months, sailing with us from Seychelles to Madagascar. Her training in Waldorf/Steiner education and love of outdoors created super fun & artistic experiences for the kids aboard the boat!
THE STORY BEHIND THE LETTERS
We chatted many times over dinner on the cockpit of Nesi, wondering: "how can we make the Expedition a screen-free experience for kids?" We thought, who doesn't LOVE getting letters in the mail?? We also like the style of Naturalist field notes from the 19th century, full of art and romance. So we created Expedition Letters, a mixture of letters and naturalist field notes, to promote a love of learning with a screen-free experience.
JOELIE'S BACKGROUND
Most famous for her baskets made from fishing net debris found in the shores of Cocos Keeling Island, Joelie also makes beautiful lino-print artwork. She creates the stamps for Green Coco's Crew Sunshirts too! Your Letters subscription directly supports Joelie's art and livelihood. We hope to share more of her work here soon!

about the

Green Coco Cooperative

We are a home-grown sailing cooperative of friends who decided to go cruising around the world! We welcome all-ages, including families with kids 6 months and up. Led by Kristian + Sabrina, we've evolved with 3 boats over the last 11 years. The "Green Coconut Run" started in 2015 in California on a 3 year trip to Tahiti. We hosted members of the co-op aboard the classic 1968 trimaran Aldebaran (42ft, read some background, with our visitors joining for 2 week legs along the way: Mexico (+Baja), El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, and Ecuador (+Galapagos). Check the historical blog posts.Upon arrival in French Polynesia, we fell in love with the place. Who doesn't?? With community financing, Kristian & Sabrina (and newborn twins) upgraded to the 2000 catamaran Selavi (46ft) and started expanding the co-op with new captains for Aldebaran (Billy & Kimber). Green Coco operated mostly in Tahiti & Tuamotus atolls during these 5 years. In early 2024, we launched the Green Coco Expedition, a world-schooling circumnavigation. New captains were recruited to run SelavĂ in Tahiti's islands. Kristian & Sabrina and (now 4 year old twins) moved aboard the 2010 catamaran Nesi (60ft) in Seychelles, starting the voyage. They headed south around Madagascar, South Africa, Namibia, and across the Atlantic to Brazil. Read more about the Expedition here. Our vision for the co-op is a space to empower our community to spend time in nature, to create more opportunities to enjoy the outdoors, and to help fulfill more dreams. We welcome all like-minded enthusiasts :)
